BACKGROUND
The Community Rejuvenation Project (CRP) has dedicated itself to cultivating healthy communities through beautification, education & celebration, using public art as a foundation for holistic, positive community engagement. Partnering with local government, community-based organizations, business owners and business organizations, since 2010, CRP has created more than 100 murals painted in Oakland, Richmond, and Hayward. These include projects commissioned by the City of Oakland and the City of Richmond. CRP’s community partners past and present include People’s Grocery, Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth, United Roots, Phat Beets, the University of Hip-Hop and many others. Since the mid 2000s, CRP has promoted public art and education with regard to youth development, teaching classes and workshops at numerous schools and youth-centric programs.

THE ALICE STREET MURAL PROJECT
CRP is planning a video documentary and corresponding mural project focused on the diverse African-American and Chinese communities intersecting at 14th and Alice Sts in Oakland. Twenty “culture keepers” from the historic Hotel Oakland and Malonga Casquelord Center will be interviewed on the history of the neighborhood, the communities that thrive there and their cultural practices. Translators will be used to conduct interviews with native Chinese speakers.
The interviews will be used to guide a mural design process by CRP. The mural portion includes painting approximately 10,000-sq. ft of surfaces on three different properties facing a parking lot in a prominent downtown location, which will be completed by a team including CRP artists and youth interns. Upon completion of the mural, CRP will hold a neighborhood block party featuring live music and dance.
A permanent website including the documentary, as well as extended interviews, photographic stills, and additional educational material, will be created to extend the reach and scope of this project.
We are projected to start the mural in July 2014, with a dedication upon completion in early August 2014.

WHAT WE NEED
We are raising $8,000 which will be matched by the East Bay Fund for Artists. Funding will go directly to the rental of two scissor lifts, the purchase of 1000 cans of Belton spray paint, 100 gallons of Novacolor acrylic; and the promotion and costs of community engagement events including presentations at Hotel Oakland and Malonga Casquelord Center and the mural dedication block party. Finally, we are hiring a professional Mandarin / Cantonese translator, Victor Luo, for the interviews, presentations, and subtitles for the documentary.

WHAT WILL BE THE IMPACT OF THIS PROJECT
This project will significantly transform blighted walls in the heart of downtown Oakland into a vibrant reflection of the diversity of the city’s vast cultural heritage. Through the words of local residents, it documents the area’s rich history. It build bridges between neighbors and community members. Finally, through the website, the public will be able to connect to local resources and all of the programs featured in the documentary.
